Get your house ready
The Christmas season is a great excuse to dress up your house in fancy festive decorations. Make some Christmas savings, grab your old Christmas cards, colourful scrap paper and all the sparkle you can muster, and let’s decorate your home in time for Christmas!
Prepare yourself with the right affordable outfit
You may not be able to invite others to the Christmas festivities thanks to the pandemic, but thereβs no reason why you can’t dress up in ugly Christmas sweaters for the occasion – they’re all the rage at the moment! If youβre feeling particularly crafty, you can even decide to make your own ugly Christmas sweater. Take one of your old sweaters you donβt wear any more and add some tinsel, some patches, and maybe an LED light string for the extra holiday flair. Youβll definitely win the ugly holiday sweater virtual party with that monstrosity!
Decorate your floors with shine
During home improvements, one of the biggest changes can be made in the simplest way – by changing your floors. A large red rug can really make a room pop in time for Christmas. Or, if you want to get fancier than that, then why not Walk on Glass instead? Glass floors can not only make a room brighter, but they can create an illusion of a larger room, meaning you can cram in more Christmassy decor without making the room look too boxed in.
Dress your front door with a bow wreath
Shout “Merry Christmas!” from the rooftops with traditional Christmas decorating ideas like a super bright and colourful wreath on your front door. You can grab a nice simple wreath from any pound shop for just Β£1, but it would be so much more fun to make your own. Hot glue different colourful bows together to a Styrofoam wreath and you’ve got yourself a unique wreath that you can use time and time again that won’t burn a hole in the pocket.
Make your own garlands and bunting
If you want to bring a festive, happy ambience into your home, you may want to make your own garlands and bunting. You can hang this decoration from the mantle, from doorways, or across the entryway of your home. Bunting and garlands are also incredibly affordable to buy from craft and handmade art sites like Etsy if you prefer not to do the work yourself.
Make your own ornaments
Christmas trees are the stars of the holiday decoration ideas during this festive season and if you donβt have any ornaments, buying them all at once can be expensive. Instead, you can try making your own out of newspaper or by decorating plain glass ornaments. Itβs time to get creative with paint, glitter, and glue! You can spend an afternoon creating your own ornaments with Christmas music playing in the background. It will be a real holiday experience.
Use your Christmas cards as decorations
When we were kids, our mum used to hang our Christmas cards up like bunting and we knew that the Christmas season was upon us. Everything may seem so technical these days, but Christmas cards are still in full flow. Decorate your bare walls with your old and new Christmas cards β there are so many pretty and colourful cards available these days you’d have to be made of stone if they don’t brighten up your moodβand your house.
Get Holiday Florals and Plants
Plants and holiday florals can brighten up any holiday space β plus, theyβre an incredibly affordable addition that can make any home feel more festive and joyous. Add a poinsettia to your entryway for a pop of colour. Get a rosemary bush for a functional but beautiful hardy plant that will outlast the season. The plants could also double up as great gift ideas for the family too.
You may even want to go as far as getting a regular subscription and delivery of plants directly to your doorstep. There are plenty of cheap options to choose from that can help you brighten up and cheer up your home this holiday season. Plants are great outdoor decoration ideas too.
Decorate your table and chairs
Decorating your main table in the dining room with Christmas colours can really impact the whole Christmas theme, but dressing up your dining chairs will spice up the entire room altogether. You don’t have to go all out – a simple wreath at the back of each chair and a lovely colourful centrepiece across the table will do the trick. You can go one step further and add a ‘Holiday’ decoration to your windows, like the image above from shelterness.com, or around the table to get you into the spirit of Christmas.
Or make your own tablescape with found objects
It’s incredibly easy to put together a tablescape with found nature objects like branches and pinecones. You can even spray paint the branches and pinecones a rich gold color so that your dinner will sparkle in response.
Get into the festive spirit by decorating your office desk
The pandemic has brought a lot of workers home which may mean you might have to work over Christmas amid the Christmas decorations. No problem! If your office is in the living room, then make it a Christmas living room and bring Christmas to your desk by grabbing some tinsel from Poundland and some cheap fairy lights. Brighten up your work desk, so you don’t feel like you’re totally missing out over the Christmas period.
Get creative with lighting
Candles are a classic for a reason β they can turn any interior design space into a cosy, calming getaway. Invest in a few pillar candles and put them in key spaces where they can warm up the room. You can even get candles that deliver a holiday-themed aroma like vanilla or cinnamon.
Extend the Christmas spirit into your child’s room by adding a Christmas light. If you have trouble selecting a night light, check out my extensive post on the best night lights for kids here.
Make lots of Christmas food!
My favourite bit about Christmas, apart from the presents, is pigging out on the delicious food. You may be going for a traditional roast turkey and all the trimmings, but this is your chance to get creative with the homemade Christmas treats! I especially love the above little green Christmas pancakes, which are so easy to make. Just add some green food colouring to the batter and cook the pancakes in different sizes. Then you just stack them up on top of each other and cover with sprinkles and a star made from apple to decorate the top. I also love making a Christmas Tree out of puff pastry, it’s so easy to make.

Invest in a small, real Christmas Tree
A huge, real Christmas tree is a sight to behold β but itβs often quite a large expense. If you want to avoid emptying out your bank account for a tree youβll have to throw out at the end of the season anyway, consider getting a smaller (but cuter!) Christmas tree. You can find some great Christmas Trees at your local Christmas Tree farm.
Plus, a smaller tree has the benefit of shedding fewer pine needles on the floor, using fewer ornaments, and using less water. And, most importantly, it wonβt make a huge impact on your bank account!
Jazz up your Christmas Tree!
Involve your children and get creative by throwing on some tinsel, baubles (don’t forget chocolate baubles!) and fairy lights. Complete your tree with an angel or a star at the top and dress up the whole look with lots of presents wrapped in colourful gift wrap. Job done!
When you love Christmas, itβs easy to spend a lot of money trying to outfit each room with the best decorations possible. However, you donβt have to spend an arm and a leg to bring holiday cheer inside. Christmas is a time of happiness, cheer and a whole lot of giving, so make sure you pass on the good cheer and enjoy this beautiful and very magical winter season, by using the tips outlined in this article on how to decorate your home for Christmas on a budget.
