What’s in September’s Degustabox?
Reese’s – 2 x 85p
“Satisfy your peanut-butter passion with this pack of 3 incredibly delicious REESE’S Peanut Butter Cups drenched in smooth HERSHEY’S chocolate! We know it’s always nice to share, but we won’t tell anybody if you just tuck into them quietly and keep them all to yourself. REESE’S – Perfect.”
Our Opinion – I love peanut butter, but I have always hated Reese’s Pieces. They are just too rich and sweet and they have a very overbearing peanut butter flavour, which is quite sickly. The only person that liked these were my eldest, who will eat anything. But, I’d rather see the back of the Reese’s Pieces and opt for regular ol’ peanut butter on bread!
Mallow & Marsh – £2.00
“Our Raspberry Marshmallow mini box contains 3 bundles of gooey deliciousness. 100% natural, sweet and fruity, these raspberry marshmallows are full bodied and packed with tangy flavour. They melt in your mouth and we highly recommend trying at least one with a cheeky squeeze of lime.”
Our Opinion – Again, just way too sweet. I do like the idea of ‘quality’ marshmallows, but the sugar content is too high that not even my boys couldn’t eat them. Perfect for those with a very sweet tooth!
Maynards and Bassets – £1.50
“They’re back! The two “favourite flavours” of the infamous Maynards Wine Gums are now available all year round! The 165g bag containing those delicious flavours within the range include: Blackcurrant and Strawberry are available again for your pleasure and enjoyment. These returning Wine Gums give you a serious burst of excitement and a delicious amount of joy!” Maynards
“Ideal for sharing with your family and your friends, the new variety of Jelly Babies is bursting with much flavoured Berry flavours included Blackcurrant, Raspberry and Strawberry. The 190g bag of “Berry Mix” contains only natural colours and flavourings to give you a deliciously soft, fruity and sweet treat. We’ve been told they are ‘Berry nice’ J” Bassets
Our Opinion – I have grown up with both of these iconic brands and, even though Jelly Babies in general are super sweet, the Berry Mix is very tasty (albeit my taste buds can only have one at a time). But, the Red & Black Wine Gums (my favourite of all the colours in the Wine Gums family) were my favourite and I realised that I could quite easily eat a whole packet in one sitting – very dangerous!
Miracle Noodles – £2.49 – DB’s Discoveries*
“Miracle Noodle is the PREMIER low calorie, soy free gluten free, vegan and non gmo, Kosher Shirataki noodle and rice. One of the most versatile noodles and rice. Miracle Noodle caters to a wide range of different demographics. From Diabetics to Coeliacs, bodybuilders and for weight loss. Miracle Noodle offers the largest variety of Shirataki noodles shapes on the market. Our mission is to introduce to people traditional foods that are low calorie and healthy from around the world.”
Our Opinion – We haven’t tried this yet, as I can’t quite convince myself to use them in a dish. They look slimy and gooey, but it’s worth a try in a healthy, low calorie stir fry.
More Drinks – 2 x £1.49
“Popping pills not for you? More Drinks provides a refreshing way to top up your vitamins, made with spring water, natural flavours and no added sugar. With 6 varieties including Multivitamins and Vitamin D, the range is in selected Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, WHSmith and Roadchef nationwide and on Ocado.”
Our Opinion – I’ve never been a pill popper, always opting for natural remedies to fix any ailments. But, these vitamin drinks are delicious! They are not too sweet and really quite refreshing, so it’s nice to be able to enjoy a ‘juice’ that contains so many vitamins in them. Still too high in sugar for my liking, but a definite alternative to regular processed juice.
Portlebay Popcorn – £2.49 – DB’s Discoveries*
“Portlebay Popcorn’s exciting award winning artisan popcorn. Popped by hand in Devon with a splash of rapeseed oil, a touch of unrefined raw cane sugar to give a delicious crunch and our totally natural seasonings. Including the best-selling Original Sweet and Salty popcorn and the brand new Cappuccino popcorn.”
Our Opinion – We’ve enjoyed Portlebay Popcorn ever since our first Degustabox and we are still enjoying them now. Having previously tried the Sweet & Salty, which is perfectly delicious, I was eager to try the Cappuccino flavour, as I love anything with coffee in it. It will take a while to get used to, but the hint of coffee with popcorn is actually quite a great idea and I scoffed the whole lot within minutes.
UP & GO – 2 x £1.39
“Up&Go is the nutritious breakfast drink from Down Under, designed for people who live life on the go. Packed with all the fibre, protein and calcium of a bowl of cereal and milk and perfect for mornings on the move, Up&Go is the most awesome way to start your day.”
Our Opinion – Another very nutritiously tasting and quite delicious drink that my youngest really enjoyed. The Vanilla aftertaste is a little strange, but the chocolate version is creamy, not too sweet and quite filling. High in protein too, so perfect for filling you up at breakfast and a great pick-me-up before exercise.
Compete Energy – £4.49
“COMPETE Energy Bites are delicious, low calorie chocolates infused with caffeine (1 bite = 1 large premium coffee). COMPETE Energy Bites provide an instant boost to help improve your alertness, endurance and physical energy. Recommended to take five minutes before physical exercise, driving, partying or studying. CAUTION: VERY HIGH in CAFFEINE.”
Our Opinion – When they said the COMPETE was high in caffeine, they weren’t lying! I was buzzing after one bite and these super tasty and very deceiving bite-sized mocha snacks are rich and tasty too – I love the coffee aftertaste! These became my favourite energy inducing snack before exercise because sometimes I don’t want to drink a whole coffee to feel the effects of caffeine. One teeny portion of COMPETE is more than enough to keep you going!
SWEET SALLY TEA – £2.40
“Crisp and refreshing black tea with a hint of citrus and spice. Sweet Sally Spiced Tea is freshly brewed organic Ceylon black tea, with Spanish organs, Sicilian lemons, a touch of organic sugar and a blend of cinnamon and cloves.”
Our Opinion – No one wanted to try this in my house, as my husband doesn’t like spiced tea, I don’t like cinnamon and my boys are too young for caffeine. So, we’re trying to find this one a good home. I like the idea of a unique cold tea and I would have tried this in an instant had there been no cinnamon in it.
What did I like most about September’s Degustabox?
The little COMPETE bite-sized caffeine energy bites do what they say on the packet – high in caffeine and they keep you buzzing soon after exercise too.
What to watch out for:
The high sugar content in this month’s Degustabox – a little disappointed…
3 out of 5 – I still love the Degustabox for its unique ability to pick out amazing unknown brands, but I was a little surprised at the high sugar content in this month’s box. I’m actively trying to offer food with lower sugar levels, as I am continuously worried about my family’s sugar diet, even though none of us really eat a lot of chocolate or sweets. But, I’ve realised it’s hard to get away from sugar in all products and, it’s for this reason, I rated this month’s box a ‘so-so’ 3 out of 5. The selection of products, however, pleasantly surprised me again and I want to purchase the COMPETE energy bites purely as pre-exercise snacks, as they really made me feel like a Duracell bunny for 30 minutes straight!
* Every month, as part of a new initiative, Team Degustabox have been digging a little deeper to introduce us to brands they love and we may not have discovered yet!
