The importance of plumbing maintenance in your home

Your house’s plumbing is probably something you don’t think about daily. You may take for granted the hot water and waste removal that plumbing provides to your home. But, regular plumbing maintenance is essential, especially if a problem arises like a blocked toilet, leaking pipe and/or clogged drain. Proper care from your local plumbing services (for example, if you live in Atlanta, you would call in your local Atlanta plumbers), can save you from these costly problems arising and cut the cost of your water bill too. Leak repair can save more than 3,000 gallons of water a year, and fixing a leaking toilet can save you up to 200 gallons a day. Regular general plumbing maintenance will ensure these problems are easily avoided with simple steps that should be done daily, weekly, and yearly.

Daily plumbing maintenance

The most common everyday problems associated with plumbing maintenance is clogged drains and where there is a drainage problem in the house. Clogs wear out your pipes and place unnecessary strain on your plumbing system. Taking regular preventive measures can save you from these nuisances as well as more significant problems in the future like a burst pipe. For daily maintenance, your local plumbers will conduct a plumbing inspection and operate drain cleaning services if needed, taking special care with the bathroom (to review a clogged toilet drain or a clogged sewer for example) and kitchen as these rooms post the most significant risk in the house.

Kitchen drains often clog due to what you put down the sink when cleaning your dishes or cooking food. Remember to never put grease or oil down the sink as they can congeal and clog the pipes. If you use a garbage disposal, ensure that you are using it properly and run cold water through it for at least 15 seconds after to ensure waste is properly flushed down. Remembering these simple things can prevent those pesky clogs from damaging your plumbing and you requiring expensive plumbing work further down the line.

Preventing bathroom clogs is essential in daily plumbing maintenance. Installing screens over the drains can catch hair and other debris from your pipes. Avoid using chemical products to remove clogs as they can corrode your pipes and cause more problems in the long run. Another staple in caring for your bathroom plumbing is to not flush anything improper down the toilet.

Weekly plumbing maintenance

Taking the time to look over your plumbing once a week can help you catch problems early and prevent significant expensive repairs. Check under your sinks for leaks or moisture, test for slow drainage and clogs, and make sure there’s no water coming from your sink’s handles or valves. Small leaks can waste hundreds to thousands of gallons a year, and you can detect these leaks yourself by checking your pipe valves, faucets, and showerheads weekly. Requesting a plumbing engineer to replace these leaky fixtures may cost a bit, but they will save you money on your water bill to make up for it.

Yearly plumbing maintenance

Even if you have a reasonably new or fancy plumbing system in your home, it’s a good idea for your plumber to regularly visit your house every year. Plumbers will not only check for small problems in your pipes, but they will ensure that everything is ageing well and working to the best of its ability. Catching problems with your water or sewer line early and operating regular sewer cleaning can save you from a disaster. These regular professional checks will save you a lot of money in the long run. A licensed plumber will ensure that all pipes will be checked, as well as appliances in your house, to recheck everything from your weekly checks. A plumber can give you advice on how to maintain your specific plumbing equipment and systems.

Regular plumbing maintenance is a must, and if you come across a problem, don’t leave it until the last minute. If you need a plumber, then contact your plumber now for any plumbing questions and queries you may have to prevent a much bigger problem from arising in the future.
