What’s in May’s Degustabox?

May 2016 Degustabox - motherhooddiaries

Products

Get Fruity – Fruity Bar

Get Fruity is an award-winning fruit and oat bar that has a high percentage of the named fruit making it authentically fruity. Get Fruity contains gluten free oats & virgin coconut oil with no added refined sugars, produced on a nut free site and is 100% natural. Get Fruity comes in six fruity flavours.”

Our Opinion – I had mixed feelings about this Fruity Bar, which tasted very fruity indeed. However, I felt that it was slightly too sweet. Not my favourite snack bar in the world.

Cranes – Cider

Cranes is one of the most innovative on trend alcoholic drinks on the market. A 4% alcoholic drink that is brewed purely from crushed cranberries, but with added juice for real flavour. It comes in three distinctive flavours: Original Cranberry, Raspberry & Pomegranate and Strawberry & Kiwi. The product is 100% natural, high in juice (16.5%+), low in calories (99 calories) and has very little added sugar (5g – we do this by using the natural sweetener stevia). This achieves a great natural taste as well as meet the consumer trend for a healthier lifestyle. Cranes was developed by identical twin brothers Ben and Dan. Both enjoy a good game of rugby, keeping fit and healthy. While at University a few years ago, always up for a drink but being health conscious thought what if cranberries were fermented……that was the beginning of Cranes. Why Cranes? We discovered that in the 17th century cranberries were discovered in America and were given the name “craneberries” after the small, pink blossoms which resemble the head and bill of a Sandhill crane. Available to purchase from Ocado.com and shop.drinkcranes.co.uk.”

Our Opinion – Hubby, rather generously, offered to try out the Cider bottles, as I struggle to drink alcohol anyway, let alone Cider, which is my least favourite of all alcohol drinks. Hubby has a sweet tooth, but he found these to be quite sweet. He did say, however, that he could really taste the cranberries coming through!

Garofalo – Fusilli Bucati Pasta

Garofalo is a traditional pasta maker from Gragnano, the birth place of pasta in Italy, near Naples in the Campania region. Pasta making the Garofalo Way Pasta is simply made with water and durum wheat semolina and you can’t produce excellent pasta if the best wheat is not used. It is the quality and quantity of gluten present primarily that determines the quality of the wheat; Garofalo only use high quality durum wheat semolina that meets strictly controlled criteria for every pack of pasta with the Garofalo signature on it.

All our pasta ranges can be bought in the following places on line Amazon.co.uk Ocado.com and Gustalia.com

Our Opinion – I normally buy the basic pasta bags because I believe pasta is pasta and I flavour the recipe well enough to hide the basics quality. But, this time, I created a pasta dish using just five ingredients (you can find my 5-ingredient Cheese and Tomato recipe on Five for a Fiver here) and Garofalo’ s pasta really made all the difference. The quality is there and you don’t have to drown the recipe in flavour to hide the pasta taste because it tastes great!

Beloved Dates – Date Nectar

Beloved, a new premium food label inspired by the most ancient of superfoods; the date, consists of a delicious collection of natural, refined-sugar free products, each packed full of date-goodness. High in fibre, low GI and containing a unique complex of minerals, fibres and phytochemicals, the humble date is considered a superfood in the East and proves to be a great all natural sweetener. All of Beloved’s products are vegan and have no added sugar – because they are only sweetened by wholesome dates or Date Nectar.”

Our Opinion – I love dates, so I was keen to try another sugar alternative out in the market today. I made some great energy balls with them (recipe coming soon) and loved the way the nectar sweetened the recipe. However, I wasn’t too keen on Date Nectar in my tea and coffee. So, perfect for desserts and baking, but not so great in hot beverages.

Democracy PR – Jack Daniels

“It’s time to dust off your outdoor furniture, fire up the grill and enjoy great food with great friends.

Add a buzz to your barbecue over the Bank Holiday weekend and become the king of the grill this summer, with the new Jack Daniel’s® Tennessee Honey Barbecue Glaze. Infused with the soft flavours of the popular Jack Daniel’s® Tennessee Honey™ Liqueur, the sticky glaze adds a hint of honey and a delicious, smooth flavour.”

Our Opinion – I haven’t tried these yet, but I’m looking forward to marinating my barbecue meat during the barbecue season – if it stops raining, that is!

Kallo – Yoghurt Topped Rice Cakes and Belgian Milk Chocolate Corn Cakes

These scrumptious rice cakes are a great alternative to a biscuit. Made with wholegrain brown rice and coated in delicious yoghurt; our on the go packs are ideal to take this sweet treat with you anywhere!”

“A guilt-free mid-morning treat or an afternoon bite, these chocolatey corn cakes are made with the highest quality ingredients, suitable for vegetarians and are also coeliac friendly. At only 78 calories per corn cake, they make a delicious snack that satisfies any chocolate craving. Alternatively transform them into an indulgent pudding, by dolloping on some whipped cream, a handful of juicy raspberries and a drizzle of honey – delicious!”

Our Opinion – We love, love, love these rice cakes! Although, I was told recently that rice cakes aren’t as healthy as oatcakes but I love the milk chocolate kind. I don’t think the boys cared whether the topping had yoghurt on it or Belgian milk chocolate on top.

Mrs. Crimble’s – Madeleines

An exciting new range of two gluten free Madeleines from Mrs Crimble’s. Perfectly baked sponge cakes available in Classic or Chocolate. The Classic is delicately flavoured with vanilla whilst the indulgent Chocolate has a gooey choc filling. Six cakes per bag, individually wrapped to enjoy on the go.”

Our Opinion – These are great snacks for on-the-go, as I can just stick a cake in the boys’ lunchboxes or hide a few in my handbag for that sweet boost. The Classic Madeleine tastes nice and light, but I’d love to try the version with the gooey chocolate in the middle. I bet I can make these too!

Pech-Keks – Misfortune Cookies

“These cookies are like a left hook.

You can’t explain how much they hurt. But they’re also perfect for people who like to laugh. Who don’t take life too seriously, or don’t mind a dose of reality now and then. They are for friends who you really like. Or acquaintances who you can’t stand. And for any party that needs some added fun, or any meal that could do with a bit more spice.” Read more here.

Our Opinion – A very quirky paradoxical version of the fortune cookies, these MISfortune cookies are quite eerie, which the boys love. The images on the front and the fact that the fortune cookie was black, captured the boys immensely. I won’t spoil the surprise by telling you what my misfortune was, but it was very interesting indeed!

The Wonderful Co. – Pomegreat

“In our California orchards, we grow only the Wonderful variety of pomegranates; the variety we feel produces the sweetest and best-tasting juice. We harvest our pomegranates when they are a deep, ruby red and bursting with flavor. Using our special recipe, we enhance the unique pomegranates with aronia juice from concentrate for a delicious and refreshing fruit drink the whole family will enjoy. POMEGREAT… YOU CAN TASTE THE CARE AND SUNSHINE IN EVERY DROP.”

Our Opinion – I love pomegranates and regularly sprinkle them onto my salads or press to make juice for the boys. Pomegreat is a sweetened version of pomegranate juice, which the boys really liked. But, I preferred my naturally pressed pomegranate juice, as this meant that I could control the sugar amount and the boys are still getting a great vitamin C infusion.

The Wonderful Co. – Almonds and Pistachios

“Wonderful Almonds are sun-ripened in our California orchards. Our high quality almonds have a sweet, mild flavor and crunchy texture. Ideal for snacking and cooking. Taste the California difference.”

“Wonderful Almonds are sun-ripened in our California orchards. Our high quality almonds have a sweet, mild flavor and crunchy texture. Ideal for snacking and cooking. Taste the California difference.”

Our Opinion – I love almonds and pistachios, in fact, I like all kinds of mixed nuts, especially when they’re paired with raisins or whizzed up into a nut butter, so I can enjoy on my oatcakes with apples on top. But, these little packets are perfect for storing in my handbag and stopping me from snacking on less healthy alternatives.

Brioche Pasquier – Croissants

A traditional French breakfast wouldn’t be the same without an all butter croissant. As all our products, these butter croissants are prepared using processes authentic to our original bakery in the West of France. Wrapped by two, they stay fresher for longer and can be eaten on the go.

Best enjoyed warm. Pre-heat your oven to 200°C and warm for 2-3 minutes. Why not try it with jam or ham and cheese? Find our delicious recipes here.

Available at Ocado and Sainsbury’s!

Our Opinion – It’s no surprise how much we love Brioche Pasquier croissants in our house because they’re so high in quality and they’re perfect snacks for breakfast, lunch or dinner, depending on how creative you can get with them. Plus, the boys love these croissants as after school snacks, so will definitely keep on buying these.

What did I like most about May’s Degustabox?

Brioche Pasquier, hands down, will always win in my eyes.
