Keeping the kids entertained during travel journeys with Amazon Prime Video – ‘Download Day’

Keeping the kids entertained during travel journeys with Amazon Prime Video - ‘Download Day’

We are fast becoming a nation of digital packers, particularly with parents and families, who are constantly trying to ensure their kids are kept entertained during long car journeys and flights. And, with the busiest travel weekend of the year proposed to be this weekend of 21st/22nd July, it’s important to make sure you’ve got your tablets prepared and ready for the long journey ahead.

The good news is that the new Amazon fire HD8 Kids Edition tablet comes packed with 32GB worth of download space and a huge variety of content available to be downloaded to the device. A couple of years ago, my husband and I, along with our two boys who were four and five at the time, embarked upon a 13-hour car journey to Switzerland for the weekend. We even made it through the 13-hour journey back to the UK, alive and kicking, but the duration would have been a lot easier for the boys if they had their tablets to turn to once they had finished all their puzzle, word, and paper games, which they had taken with them in their holiday rucksacks. This time, on the way to an annual BBQ, I decided to pack the new Amazon fire HD8 tablet, along with their favourite puzzle and colouring books. This journey was a breeze, for I had made sure that the boys had their favourite shows downloaded to the fire HD8, as well as their favourite books and games if they got bored with watching their TV shows.

The Amazon Fire HD8 Kids Edition Tablet is perfect for travel as it is lightweight and comes in a protective padded cover. It’s also very easy to use, with multiple customised features that allow parents complete control and peace of mind over what their children watch and play with on the tablet.

  • You can pin your child’s favourite titles to their home screen – This way they have quick access to their favourite shows. From the Home Screen just press and hold any item from the Carousel and then tap ‘Add to Home’
  • Manage the storage space before you set off – Make sure there is enough storage space to download content to your child’s profile. You can expand the device’s storage by using a micro SD card, which is available to buy on Amazon.

Amazon Prime Video

More videos are being uploaded to Amazon Prime Video every day so there will be tons of shows available for your kids to watch during those long car/flight journeys. Here are some tips for watching video while travelling abroad:

  • EU residents have access to the same titles when streaming from their country. While travelling outside of the EU, residents have access to streaming and downloading Prime Originals titles
  • The shows you can watch abroad are featured in the Watch While Abroad carousels, but this feature is not available for other Prime titles, which can only be streamed and downloaded from within the UK.
  • You can find titles that are available to watch while travelling abroad here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/watchabroad
  • Don’t forget that you can download selected Prime shows to your child’s profile for offline playback. For more information go to Download Prime Video Titles

Other great tips for making the most out of the Amazon Fire HD8 Kids Edition Tablet

  • You can find a great selection of books to download and read on the tablet, both non-fiction and fiction. Some books offer the option of reading to your child if they are not able to read yet, or if they are at a reading stage, they can read along with the book.
  • The protective casing that surrounds the tablet should ensure minimised breakages, however, if the tablet is broken, there is a two-year worry-free guarantee, which means if anything happens to the tablet, Amazon will replace it for free, with no questions asked.
  • The Fire HD8 Kids Edition tablet includes one year of FreeTime Unlimited so kids get unlimited access to 5,000 books, games, apps and movies/TV Shows. Parents are able to personalise screen time limits, by setting goals for your child’s reading, gaming and watching. There is also an additional filter that allows for kids to search the internet browser without parents having to worry about them stumbling upon explicit content. You set your child’s age and Amazon will ensure that the content viewed is child-friendly.

So, if you’re setting off on the busiest travel weekend of the year, make sure you are fully prepared for the journey. It’s great that parents provide kids with a variety of educational, but fun activities to enjoy in the back of the car, whether this be on paper, or electronic. Keeping the kids entertained during with Amazon Prime Video means that parents find that little bit of respite during a long journey while the kids have fun in the car.
