Decorating your walls with Graham & Brown – Canvas Review
User Rating: 5 (1 votes)

We recently moved to a lovely house in the suburbs after living in a small, cramped 2-bed flat with two busy boys for almost five years. I am relieved that my kids can finally step out onto our 40-metre garden whenever they want to and, even though I’m going to miss my friends and the fact that my babies were born in that flat, living in a house just screams freedom and versatility to actually be able to decorate our home how we want, without the need to think about the space.

Graham & Brown kindly offered Motherhood Diaries the chance to review two very beautiful canvases to christen our new walls, which, I believe, would be an ideal fit for any home. Please find below a full review of each canvas and details on how to buy them from Graham & Brown’s website.

Just as a side note: Graham & Brown are holding a kids’ sale, which goes live 4th September 2015 and will last just over two weeks (ends 21 September 2015). You can grab 20% off the whole kids range, from Disney’s Frozen wallpaper and nursery décor to Marvel accessories. Keep reading and Motherhood Diaries can offer you a further 10% off! What is Graham & Brown all about?

Graham & Brown’s heritage came about in 1946 by two dear friends, Harold Graham and Henry Brown, who cleverly procured a large supply of surplus metallic paper, an eight-colour surface printer and a new embossing machine. The two men began a wallpaper revolution and, following the hard years of war, the public were desperate to brighten up their homes. So they snapped up Graham & Brown’s products so fast that the friends could barely meet with the demand. The company grew quickly until the energy crisis of the Korean War in the early 1950s, when Harold Graham tragically died at 39. Henry Brown was determined to keep their dream alive and so kept the business going and growing. He appointed Harold’s older brother Herbert as Director.

Nowadays, the business has expanded internationally, with divisions established in France, Holland, Russia, Canada and China, with Germany being its latest addition.

When I first cast eyes over the canvas of London, I immediately felt a sense of pride, being a born and raised Londoner myself. My favourite colours are also black, white and red, therefore, I instantly loved this canvas wholeheartedly and would have placed it anywhere in the house. The perfect idea of having the Union Montage sit on the wall by the door, as you enter the kitchen, worked straight away. The couch in our kitchen has hints of red and black and our dining table is black and red too., so, the colours worked harmoniously together. What I liked about the placement most, however, is that the cooking corner is at the other end of the kitchen. When I’m daydreaming or waiting for something to cook, I can glance over at the canvas and get lost in the hustle and bustle of London again. You may be able to take the girl out of London, but you can’t take London out of the girl!

Securing the canvas via Mount Strips were a bit of a job as you need to align the set of 5 together to ensure that everything sits perfectly and nothing is out of sync. It’s a two-man job for sure, but once it’s fitted correctly, this is how it looks in our kitchen right now:

Happiness Typo

“Keep yourself inspired with this Happiness Typo wall art piece and let those positive feelings permeate your home. The design features various mantras associated with happiness, while its large-scale size makes it a perfect centrepiece for any room. Produced in clean, crisp black and white, this canvas is suitable for any colour palette you may wish to use. These quirky quotes are sure to put a spring in your step!” Graham & Brown

I love art with meaning, especially one that creates happiness, so the Happiness Typo is the perfect canvas for me. I’ve listed out the quirky happiness phrases, that I’m sure a lot of you will have recognised in your lifetime:

“Patience is a virtue”

“Happiness is not a destination it is a way of life”

“Good things come to those who wait”

“A little bit of what you fancy does you good”

“We’re here for a good time not a long time”

I figured that the best place to put a canvas that has such a positive vibe would be by the front door, so you can glance at it before you leave the house (perhaps to start the day ahead) or when you walk back inside (after a long, hard day, maybe). I also repeat some of the mantras to my boys (aged 3 and 4 years old), in the hope that I can instil some positivity and happiness in them and, perhaps, practice what I preach. So, below is where my happy canvas sits right now:

Secured by Mount Strips, this canvas is sturdy and strong. It wasn’t difficult to secure to the wall at all, but make sure you use a leveller, as it makes a huge difference to the overall look and feel of the canvas. Who wants wonky art!?

What did I like most about Graham & Brown’s canvases?

Both are strong, durable and high in quality. The colours are rich and vibrant and they can really add a brightening effect to the room. A definite must-buy!

What to watch out for:

It’s tricky to align each of the 5 Union Montage canvases together, so I would enlist in some help with that one.

Rating:

5 out of 5 – What can I say? Two very personal and sentimental canvases for me that have truly brightened up our walls and given them some meaning. I would strongly suggest checking out Graham & Brown’s website, as they sell a wide variety of awesome products to lovingly kit out your home – the hard part will be choosing what to buy!
