6 Thrills and Spills Father’s Day Activities for Dad and Lads

Thrills and spills fathers day - motherhooddiaries

Father’s Day is 107 years old this year, and it all began when a young American woman decided to honour her father. While sitting in church in May 1909, Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington, had the idea. Sonora’s mother had died in childbirth and her father had raised her single-handedly together with his other five children. The following year, she wanted to celebrate Father’s Day on 5th June, her dad’s birthday and petitioned for the holiday to be recognised by the city. Requiring more time to arrange the celebrations, Spokane’s mayor moved the date forward by two weeks, and the first Father’s Day was officially celebrated on June 19, 1910.

Fast forward more than 100 years and Father’s Day is a global celebration where fathers all over the world are made to feel extra special. This year, it’s on Sunday, 18th June. If you’re scratching your head trying to think of a fun activity for your dad on Father’s Day, here are 6 great adrenaline pumping ideas:

A supercar ride on a track

Take a very fast car that costs a bank vault of money, add a smooth tarmac circuit, and you’re ready for a fabulous supercar driving day. Dad and his mates can choose from a list of rubber burning motors – a classic British Aston Martin, a Nissan GTR, a Porsche, a Subaru Impreza, a Tesla even. With tyres screeching and a few laps at well over 100mph, you won’t find a happier bunch of guys anywhere.

A paintball experience

Thrills and spills fathers day - motherhooddiaries Hunt down your enemies, pull the trigger and splatter them in bright paint. These exhilarating paintball games are the perfect activity for a fully loaded Father’s Day. The guys will be running for cover amidst much laughter and mayhem. The emphasis is on fun and plenty of thrills, and Dad’s team will have to work their way through a series of adventures in the woods. The team’s missions (should they decide to accept them) will include protecting a supply convoy, taking out enemy snipers, and rescuing a captured weapons store, and splattering their opponents with paint before they even know they’re there.

Tank Driving

6 Thrills and Spills Father’s Day Activities for Dad and Lads - tank - motherhooddiaries Let Dad be an all-action military hero for the day in an exciting tank driving experience. You won’t recognise him when he’s kitted out in Kevlar army gear, sitting at the controls of a beefed-up tank and other ex-military vehicles. His orders will be to drive over suicidal bumps and drops and steer a heavy armoured personnel vehicle through muddy ravines. Tank paintball is an option too, and if he’s lucky enough, he might end the day crushing a car under the tanks mighty caterpillar tracks.

Tiger Moth flight

6 Thrills and Spills Father’s Day Activities for Dad and Lads - plane - motherhooddiaries What’s got fabric covered wings, bracing wires and a wooden propeller? A vintage Tiger Moth, that’s what. This magnificent flying machine is the ultimate dream for aviation fans and holds a special place in the hearts of anyone who’s ever flown in one. Arrange a session with a company that specialises in memory making events such as Into the Blue, strap Dad into the cockpit and let him have the time of his life in this incredible bi-plane that oozes British aeronautical engineering at its best.

Speed boating up the Thames

6 Thrills and Spills Father’s Day Activities for Dad and Lads - speedboat thames - motherhooddiaries What better way to see parts of London’s waterways and the city than in a speedboat on the River Thames. An exciting ride in one of these rigid inflatable boats is all about speed and thrills. Because of the craft’s great manoeuvrability, Dad will be able to explore all the famous Thames landmarks … if they don’t flash by too quickly! These twin-engine, 12-seater racers have been specially designed for safety and comfort and are surprisingly quiet but very, very fast. Being able to reach up to 35 knots means they ‘pull some G’, and with eyes watering and cheeks flapping as they speed along, the boat will eat up the miles, while Dad enjoys one of the fastest sightseeing tours ever devised. It’s a boat ride like no other, with stomach-churning thrills, speed, plus the exhilarating London sights.

6 Thrills and Spills Father’s Day Activities for Dad and Lads - off road - motherhooddiaries Off-roading in a 4×4 is another terrific experience on offer for Dad and his mates. It’s time to get down and dirty in a powerful machine that can tackle the steepest climbs and the muddiest of dirt roads. These impressive off-road vehicles love nothing better than dirt, mud, lumps and bumps, and will test everyone’s off-road driving skills to the max. Put your foot to the floor in a customised 4-wheel drive vehicle, a Jeep, or a top-of-the-range Land Rover or Range Rover, and don’t forget to tighten your seatbelts!
